Chiefs Fans Are Happy As The Club Makes A ‘Huge Announcement

Modern footballers ordinarily build their marks in association with their Jersey number which the club assigned them to, albeit some choke under the pressure and weight that comes with a certain number some equally get more from it. Kaizer Chiefs have this afternoon taken a consciously thoughtout decision to gift midfield maestro Nkosingiphile Ngcobo one of the most important number in the club’s 51-year history.

Ngcobo was one of the most integral parts of the team last season, and was described as arguably the best player of a campaign which was characterised by a spectrum of dismal performances and great performances in equal measure – the latter being in the Caf Champions League in which the team went all the way to the final and ended up as runners up.

And it seems the then Jersey no. 37 has been rewarded with an even better number, which suggests his examplary performances had not actually gone unnoticed.

The club confirmed on their official twitter account that Ngcobo has been given the privilege of wearing the number 12 shirt ahead of the 2021/22 season.

“New Jersey #12…Nkosingiphile Ngcobo joins legends with #12. The new 2021/22 season will see an exciting new dawn for Ngcobo after the talented midfielder was handed the famous and legendary jersey #12 by Kaizer Chiefs,” the club tweeted.

It is a big responsibility for the 23-year-old as before him, the number was made famous by one of Chiefs’ greatest midfielders ever, Thabo ‘Tsiki Tsiki’ Mooki. Chiefs fans, particularly those who watched Mooki in action in the late 1990s and early 2000s, know what he was capable of doing with football at his feet.

Although the number has been worn by a vaudeville of players in recent seasons such as Dominic Mateba, Itumeleng Khune (during the 15/16 season), and George Maluleka (for 7 years until he left in 2020), none of them have really reached Mooki’s levels while donning the eminent number, and it will be upon Ngcobo to change that trend quite significantly by producing quality performances with unsurpassable consistency.

The Amakhosi faithful wasted no time to hop into the comment section, with many of them expressing excitement, but reiterating that Ngcobo would have to even up his game now that he has the number 12 at his disposal.

Others asked why the club has again not allocated the jersey 15 – which was made famous by the distinguishable Doctor Khumalo, but the club restated it still retired.
