Benni still assessing Ekstein&Shonga
Coach Benni McCarthy of the AmaZulu has stated that they are not in a hurry to decide whether or not to sign Hedrick “Pule” Ekstein and Justin Shonga.
AmaZulu is evaluating both Ekstein and Shonga. Usuthu’s KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s Cup final defeat to Maritzburg United at Chatsworth Stadium at the weekend included the latter. Ekstein was present, but he didn’t get a chance to run.
Shonga is a free agent after leaving Cape Town City a few weeks ago, while Ekstein has been without a club since leaving Sabail FK in Azerbaijan last month.
AmaZulu kick off their 2021/22 season against Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarterfinals at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday, before facing defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Swallows, SuperSport United, Golden Arrows, Baroka, and Kaizer Chiefs in their first six league games.
McCarthy has a unique perspective on the team’s grueling first seven games of the new season, noting that the league has always given him difficult early schedules. Nonetheless, the Usuthu coach insisted that they are ready to go.
“We’ll have a look at them,” says the narrator. Obviously, we just have a week till the season begins, so we’re not in a rush to add. However, if there are excellent players like that available, it costs us nothing to have a look at them and see if they fit into our group. McCarthy stated, “We have a week or more to make a decision on them.”
I’d say it’s typical of the league. Never wanting to give me a break as a coach… Always making it difficult for me to get there, but as I’ve said, I’m not a Champions League winner for nothing [referring to his 2004 Uefa Champions League triumph with FC Porto]. So nothing in my life was easy,” McCarthy explained.
