All five SANDF occupants of the vehicle were declared dead at the scene RIP
On Saturday; 17 September 2022; five South African National Defence Force (SANDF); members were killed in Komatipoort; when their vehicle’s front tyre burst; it veered off the road; and hit a tree.
All the occupants of the vehicle died; at the scene of the car crash. The SANDF in its statenent said; the members were travelling from Zonstral to Macademia Operational Base; along the Coopersdal road.
According to Moeti Mmusi; the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety; Security and Liaison; a light delivery vehicle; the soldiers were travelling in; apparently lost control; when its front tyre burst; causing the vehicle to veer off the road and hit a tree.
Mmusi revealed that; the crash will be probed by law enforcement agencies; who work in conjunction with the Road traffic Management Corporation; to ascertain what caused the accident.
Vusi Shongwe; MEC for community safety; security and liaison; in Mpumalanga; urged motorists to be careful when driving on the roads; to avoid unnecessary deaths.
The spokesperson for the SANDF; Brigadier General; Andries Mokoena-Mahapa; confirmed the passing of the soldiers; to a local newspaper.
Mokoena-Mahapa; revealed that the department is devastated by the loss of five of its members.
He said the soldiers were also part of 9 South African Infantry Battalion; deployed under Operation Corona [border safeguarding] in Mpumalanga.
Mokoena-Mahapa; said; the ministry and the whole defence force; are sending their sincere sympathies to the families; friends and colleagues; of the soldiers who lost their lives during the accident.
A the statement released by; the Defence and Military Veterans Minister Thandi Modise; said; the SANDF Chief; members of the Military Command Council and the rest of the SANDF members; are bereaved by the passing of these patriotic soldiers and convey their sincere condolences to the families of the deceased.
