It is alleged that he was brutally murdered in broad daylight in PE on Friday after he’d gone to repair his VW Polo tyre, and while he seated in his car unsuspecting, an assailant who emerged from a Chevrolet approached his car and fired multiple shots at close range.

The 23-year-old was rushed to a nearby hospital but he had suffered severe gunshot wounds and died.

Police have since confirmed that they have dispatched a search team for the perpetrators and they hope to bring them to book as matter of urgency.

Jaftha’s death has again raised concerns about people’s safety in this country, especially in townships, where violent crimes have risen sharply over the last few years.

The government is now clearly losing its grip on crime with suspected hits becoming a norm, and as is the case, minister Bheki Cele might go to sympathise with Jaftha’s family, but we know that another one is next.

What needs to be done to prevent violent crime?

South Africa needs to relook into its gun laws, our liberal gun laws have allowed unsuitable people to own guns which are used to carry out these crimes.
There is another issue of cross-border laundering of guns from neighbouring countries which needs to dealt with decisively.
There needs to be police visibility in gang ridden areas.
Perpetrators of violent crimes should be given the most severe punishment.
What do you make of Jaftha’s murder?
