CORONAVIRUS Good News for everyone

The spread of the Coronavirus virus has been declared a global disaster that claimed millions of lives. The loss which Covid-19 has caused will be felt in many years to come.

But the is good news as delivered by Professor Abdool Karim. According to the Professor, the future Covid-19 variants are likely to be ‘much weaker than Omicron. Although future variants could continue to evolve and spread faster, Karim said, they could cause less severe disease. Karim’s statement comes after National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) acting executive director Prof Adrian Puren confirmed the country is likely to exit the fourth wave in the next week.

These are good news for everyone in the country and the globe at large. The economy of many countries has been negatively affected by Covid-19 and if what Karim is saying is true, this would be the perfect time to return to normality.

As of today, the cumulative number of #COVID19 cases identified in SA is 3 540 891 with 6 762 new cases reported. Today 181 deaths have been reported bringing the total to 92 830 deaths. The cumulative number of recoveries now stands at 3 309 735 with a recovery rate of 93.5%.

Meanwhile, experts say ita time for the South African government to end the State of National Disaster which was declared at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic on March 15, 2020. This comes as the Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, is set to announce whether this will lapse or be extended on Saturday, January 15.

President Ramaphosa must allow the State of Disaster to lapse as it is no longer necessary for managing the virus. On the contrary, it is doing SA more harm than good, by undermining our social, economic, and democratic recovery.
