Rapper Brian Mapaka arrived at the Enyobeni tavern on Saturday night hoping for a great performance and a good turnout.

When he left he couldn’t walk and had to be carried home by his friends. Exhausted and injured, he was covered in bite marks from teenagers fighting to survive.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has revealed that 21 young people between the ages of 13 and 17 died in the East London tavern – but their cause of death remains a mystery.

Mapaka, 23, barely escaped with his life. His testimony could help solve a mystery that has not only perplexed South Africa, but the world.

The young musician who spoke to us about his ordeal said it was just after 1am when he finished his set and realised the place was more packed than he had anticipated.

Together with his friend and producer, they decided to go straight home as they couldn’t stand the crowd.

“As we were approaching the exit we saw people coming from upstairs pushing and running towards the door. It was a little bit confusing because the plan was to do a meet and greet with the fans but right there I knew it was time to leave,” he said.

The tavern was celebrating a combined birthday for their two resident DJs on Saturday, an event that attracted young people from different townships in East London.

Suddenly, panic struck the crowd. According to Brian, the bouncers sprayed the panicking teenagers with an unknown liquid.

“I felt the moist on my hands and smelled it and I knew right there that it was pepper spray,” Brian added.

He told us that they were stuck at the exit and they could hardly breathe. There were no windows on the passage leading towards the door.

As the young people were pushing each other to try and leave the venue and try to catch a breath, some started biting those in front of them as they struggled to breathe. Some peed on themselves in pain.

Those at the back, he said, were pushing him and the others forward while those in front were pushing them backwards as they wanted to force their way into the venue.

“We were basically being pushed back and forth and I was slowly losing my breath. I was also being bitten by those behind me as they fought for their lives and those in front bit my hands as they were pushing back and forth. My whole lower body was numb because we were pressed on each other. I couldn’t move because my legs were not on the floor,” he said.

Brian said his height also saved him. From time to time he kept raising his head to try and catch some air.

“We were at the door for a few minutes but it felt like hours. I managed to reach out to a security guard who pulled me out,” he added.

With the help of the guard and his friends Brian was carried home.

Traumatised and struggling to sleep after the ordeal, Brian, who went to sleep at his friend’s house, said he was shocked when his friend’s mother came banging on the door to ask if they were back. She told them that people had died in the tavern.

Police are investigating an incident of the multiple death at the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park in Eastern Cape earlier this morning. Police minister Bheki Cele visited the area. This is a video of the tavern where the incident happened.

Enyobeni: Esinako’s parents didn’t know she wasn’t home

Without her parents’ permission, Esinako Sanarhana travelled more than 30 km with her friends for a birthday party in East London. It was pens down and everyone was excited for the huge celebration.

But by sunrise on Sunday, the 17-year-old grade 12 learner was one of the 21 young people killed at the Enyobeni tavern.

Speaking on behalf of the family, her uncle Monde Malangeni said Esinako’s parents didn’t even know she wasn’t home until they were woken up by a friend around 4am to say she had been killed.

Malangeni said that the last time Esinako’s parents saw her was on Saturday night. She was wearing clothes to sleep in and they didn’t suspect anything.

“We believe that Esinako and her friends organised transport to drop them off at the tavern to attend the event. There was no way they could have walked there because it’s far,” Malangeni said.

Malangeni told us that when the teenagers were informed that the place would close at 2am they were forced to wait on the passageway for their transport to arrive.

That’s where she and others were found dead.

To her parents’ surprise when they went to the mortuary to identify her body, Esinako was dressed only in black and so were her friends.

“This was planned right under the parents’ noses. It’s sad for us as parents to have to identify our daughter in such a place. Not once did we ever think she would want to attend such an event,” added Malangeni.

He described Esinako, who was from Nompumelelo location outside East London, as a quiet and calm child and they believe she went to the tavern out of curiosity.

“Our child is in the mortuary today because of peer pressure. She just tagged along,” he said.

The Enyobeni tavern has since been closed down by the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, which has also revoked its licence.

The SAPS has appointed a team of forensic experts to investigate the cause of the teenagers’ deaths.

RIP | Another DEATH Leaves Sundowns Fans In Shock

DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have been rocked this morning, this is following news that one of the club’s die-hard supporters has unfortunately passed away.

It was confirmed earlier this morning that one of the club’s most prominent supporters, Luther Chabalala has sadly died.

The news was shared by Farrington Malepe on Twitter, he nonetheless did not reveal details pertaining to the cause of his death nor the how his funeral proceedings will take place.

Malepe simply expressed his profound and most sincere condolences to the fallen supporter who hailed from the most vibrant Tshiawelo Protea branch.

“We lost Luther Chabalala from Tshiawelo Protea Branch @Masandawana💔. Rest in Peace Mshengu🙏,” he posted on his Twitter account.

Sundowns as a club have not yet said anything with regards to this tragedy, but one hopes they will do so with time like they always do.

Chabalala’s death comes few months after the death of another prominent Downs supporter John Black Madumo, commonly referred to as the ‘Master Drum’ due to his extraordinary drum skills, who died of unknown causes in March.
